Title: RoutineSize:
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Completed: November Exhibition Text: To represent the moments in my life where I felt lost and confused. I felt myself drifting away in the same old routine. As if I was on autopilot as I endlessly moved the brush hoping to feel some sort of emotion. Emotionless I stayed, and the endless loop repeated. Inspired by John Singer Sargent's paintings. Inspired by Remedios Varo’s artstyle and TXT’s unique storytelling.

Planning:
My first sketch follows a similar structure to John Singer Sargent piece, however instead the canvas is facing the audience while my back will be facing towards the audience as well. The atmosphere will be in my room, instead of outside here. On the wall there will be sketches scattered all over the wall, crumpled papers on the floor and paint all over the place. I want it to look messy, as to represent the mindset I was in as well as an accurate representation of how my room looks during down days, a metaphoric relation.
My second sketch is a more accurate representation of me and my room. First sketch was done from my head with no references. With this sketch, I first had my sister take pictures of me in the same pose as the sketch. From there I put grids over the picture and began sketching. I then went back into my reference picture and edited the colors of it until I was satisfied with the general color palette. Once that was finished, I dotted down the main colors visible in the reference. |
While taking pictures I had a different Idea come to mind. My third sketch is very different from the rest of the sketches. For this one in particular I picked out small details I liked from the other sketches and added them here. Instead of a bedroom atmosphere I am in my bathroom. Once I had a picture I liked I sketched the image and began adding and adding to it. I ended up with an almost fantasy drawing. I tried to add components that could be tied to either Remedios Varo or TXT's music video. For Remedios, I added human-like plants, the plants are to represent old age as they are seeping into the backroom, almost like it hasn't been taken care of. For TXT, it can also be represented by the nature present in the piece of the water, as I have a paintbrush in hand emitting the same colors present in the MV excerpts.

Process:
Before I measured out the grids, I lighted and painted the canvas with watered down brown paint. Then I began measuring ?x? grids onto the canvas. Although I had the grids to rely on, I still had to use a ruler to ensure everything was perfectly aligned. I don't usually do paintings with backgrounds or objects other than a portrait, therefore even during the sketching process I was struggling a bit.

Once the sketch was done, I began painting the colors as I saw them and avoiding blending. I did this because I wanted to see what I was working on, as well as due to the piece having many colors, I wanted to make sure each component had the same base color. With past paintings, I kept having the same problem of not being able to create the same colors, for example in my portraits, I would finish painting for the day with a blank spot evident, the next day, I’ll try recreating the color and it just wouldn't turn out the same. Therefore I first began by adding the shadows first. While watching a couple painting videos, I saw people begin their process with adding the darker values first and I wanted to give it a try. Then I added the lighter colors. During this process I ignored the water altogether, this was something I would add once everything was painted.
