Title: Auction/Price TagSize:
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Completed: Exhibition Text: Auction represents the over-sexualization of women, and the common occurrence in which people over-step boundaries with absolutely no remorse for their actions. No is no, but what should one do if they don't listen? This is represented in the form of an auction as people bid for a statue of a woman in nude. Inspired by Remedios Varo and Nxde by (G )-idle.

Inspiration:
Nxde by (G)-IDLE
|
Nxde by (G)-IDLE was made to represent the over-sexualization of women in the entertainment industry, more specifically, the kpop industry. The music video is full of references to Marylin Monroe as well as Bansky. However, a part of the music video that stuck most to me was this particular timestamp. Here we see one of the members, Soyeon, in a case, she is the art piece, and the people on the outside are bidding for her. During the verse for this part, she taunts the people “bidding” for her,
“If you were expecting some rated r show, Oh i’m sorry, but that not what we’re showing, For a refund, see that direction” In return, the people go from throwing money at her to throwing popcorn. It is very evident what they are trying to convey due to the straightforwardness of the whole thing. Women are sometimes viewed as if they are objects to be admired. The goal of this song, as mentioned by the group, was for when people search up inappropriate things about them on social media, for example “(G)-idle nude” instead of pictures showing up, they get this song. Similarly, this song is also tied to the ongoing problem of the sexualization of children. The G in (G)-Idle means girls, while “idle” means children. They used their name in order to clear the searches of inappropriate media of children, instead people will get their song on the searches, a smart way to combat this ongoing issue. |
Planning:
Most if not all my planning sketches were similarly very similar, however instead I changed the pose of the statue to the piece. I kept going back and forth on the pose for this piece, because composition wise, I liked the way the whole piece looked with the statue being stood up, however I liked the feelings evoked with the statue sitting down. In the end I ended up choosing the sitting down pose. I revised it a little, as I wanted to incorporate the popcorn throwing seen in (G)-IDLE’s music video. I made it so that the statue was covering herself with a cloth, with her free arm, however the people are not happy with what they are seeing. I also made it so that people were still bidding for her, therefore money is also being thrown, however I want to make it evident that both parties are wrong, while one doesn't care and still wants to buy her, the other wants to still buy her, but wants the cloth removed. I also added a chain over her arm in the piece. I wanted to add life to the piece, because as mentioned in the inspiration, women are sometimes seen as objects to be admired, and even if she was made to be admired, she feels taken advantage of. I wanted her to represent this.

Process:
I started off the piece by painting the whole canvas with a very light gray, brown, color. Then once it dried, I began painting my sketch onto it. This time around, I decided not to use grids, due to how time consuming they are. While painting the sketch however, I began regretting that decision as I had trouble making the sketch with paint. I kept going over the sketch and changing the proportions and eventually, I got a sketch I was happy with, and honestly with all of that, I did it faster then when I used grids. It was also a lot less stressful, since grids take time since one has to measure it and so on, I get easily bored and frustrated.

Once I was done with the sketch, I began plotting down the base colors for each object in the piece. I started off with the background, which was full of reds. I wanted the background to represent a luxurious theater, from the references I gathered, red, gold garments and crystals (chandeliers) are the main components. I focused on not adding too much detail right now, only focusing on adding flat colors. I used a big brush to plot all the colors, only using the small brushes for smaller objects. I ended up painting over a lot of the objects as the painting began looking too crowded. I also ended up adding a lot more tables than I intended. Originally, I was only going to add 5-6, in which I added 20 instead since there was a lot of empty space.
|
Once all the colors were set, I began painting the floor. I made the floor a variety of gray colors, Adding markers shading wherever the tables were to show shadows. I did this all throughout the painting. Once I was done, with the leftover grays, I painted the cube like shape in the middle of the piece that holds the statue. Once that dried I began painting the cloth on the tables, this was the most tedious and hard part of the painting. Everything was going well with the tables closer in view, but the tiny ones at the back were a lot harder to paint.
